A Grieving Gift
A Grieving Gift explores the transcendental meaning of death, intangible realms, and a construct beyond the confines of the reasoning mind. The artwork seeks to initiate conversations around death, loss, and grief. Such topics and experiences, often considered personal, are, in fact, universal at their cores. This has always been true, but more so after the world lost over six million people to COVID-19. Integrating difficult conversations into our mainstream culture can nurture a supportive environment within society.
Currently in development and building upon an earlier series of black soft sculptures, A Grieving Gift evolves into a scalable, immersive installation spanning over 1,000 square feet. Encompassing stand-alone sculptural forms, drawings, laser light, and audio elements, the project adapts to diverse spaces, creating an immersive experience. This work confronts death not as an end but as a transformative aspect of life.
The title, A Grieving Gift, reflects the paradox of grief: while painful, it can lead to a deeper self-understanding. Grief expert Dr. Julia Samuel writes, “Death is the great exposer: it forces hidden fault lines and submerged secrets into the open and reveals how crucial those closest to us have been.” Over time, grief can become a gift from those we have lost—a path to deepen us.
Death, an inescapable yet essential facet of life, is often shunned in contemporary culture—reduced to entertainment in films and games rather than recognized as life's final, precious gift.
Born from mourning loved ones and seeking meaning in their absence, this project challenges the collective silence around death, inviting open, reverent dialogue. By normalizing these conversations, we want to create spaces where grief is understood and honoured.
